The family moved to Reedville in 1942. After becoming widowed, Viola and her sons, Gene and Wayne, moved to Hillsboro in 1957, where she resided until 2001. She then moved to Beaverton, and later to Portland. Viola worked at the Meyer and Frank store in downtown Portland for more than thirty years. She rode the bus to and from work every day. While living in Hillsboro, she became very involved with the Hillsboro chapter of the Royal Neighbors of America and the Rebekah Lodge. After her retirement, Viola spent many hours quilting with members of the Rebekah Lodge, donating many of her quilts to at-risk babies and children under 6. Viola is survived by her sons Gene and Wayne and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmer Dietzman, her parents, her brother, Milton, and her sisters Vada and Vesta.
